The first Steps are Understanding Why a Dog Acts The Way It Does.

1.
My life is likely to last 10-15 years.
Any separation from you will be painful for me
Remember that BEFORE you get me.

2.
Give me time to understand what you want from me.

3.
Place your trust in me. It is crucial to my well-being.

4.
Don't be angry with me for long, & don't lock me up as punishment.
You have your work, entertainment & friends. I have only YOU.

5.
Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words,
I understand your voice.

6.
Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget.

7.
Please don't hit me. I can't hit back,
but I can bite & scratch and I really don't want to do that.

8.
Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy,
ask yourself if something might be bothering me.
Perhaps I'm not getting the right foods or I've been out in the
sun too long or my heart is getting old and weak.

9.
Take care of me when I get old. You too will grow old one day.

10.
Go with me on difficult journeys. NEVER say,
"I can't bear to watch, or let it happen in my absence."
Everything is easier for me if YOU are there.

Remember, I LOVE YOU!!

               changing_colors.gif       HELPFUL  POTTY TRAINING HINTS.

changing_colors.gif    WHEN DOES MY CHI HAVE TO PEE?

         changing_colors.gif    POTTY TRAINING SCHEDULE.

changing_colors.gif    WHY DOES MY PUPPY BARK, CHEW, WHINE?

Like the Alpha Wolf, the other dogs look to the Lead Dog for Direction.  Yes, this is you.  This is accomplished through gentle but consistent, obedience training.  If your dog thinks of you as submissive, it probably will never obey.

Prevent “accidents” instead of waiting for accidents to happen.

I Must Guard My People and My Property!

WHEN YOU LEAVE YOUR DOG ALONE THEY STEP UP TO BE THE ALPHA DOG AND PROTECT THE HOUSE.  THIS RESPONSIBILITY MAY MAKE THEM A BIT NERVOUS.  THEY BARK TO WARN OFF INTRUDERS.  THEY CHEW WHEN THEY ARE NERVOUS, YOU LEFT THEM WITH SUCH A HUGE RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT THE WHOLE HOUSE, THEY ARE NOT SURE WHEN YOU WILL BE BACK!  THESE BEHAVIORS HAPPEN MOST OFTEN WHEN  THE DOG IS SEPARATED FROM IT'S PACK.

For the soft at heart, this is harder for you than the puppy!

For those of you who are lazy, forget it, it will never happen!

Don't give in to his (your or your puppies)complaining or tantrums!

All dogs do best when kept to a routine schedule.

Establish a Feeding and Potty Schedule

Dogs have to go potty when...

            Sleep

         dogtire.gif

A puppy who's looking for a place to go potty will suddenly circle about while sniffing the floor OR run out of sight!

dog0004.gif                                          "Some days you're the dog; some days you're the hydrant." -Unknown

  • sniffing is instinct he's looking for a place that's already been used. If he can't find one, he'll start one! By preventing accidents in the house, you'll teach him that the only appropriate bathroom is the one outside!

Praise the puppy when he goes in the right place.

Delayed praise is not effective, so witnessing him going in the right spot is important.

If you catch the pup in the act, stay calm. Say NO while you scoop the puppy up immediately - don't wait for him to stop piddling - and carry him outside to an area he's used before. As you set him on the ground, tell him “THIS IS WHERE YOU GO POTTY!” and praise him as he finishes the job. Leave him out a few more minutes to make sure he's done before bringing him back in.

Most Professionals recommend crate training.  A puppy will not go to the potty where he eats or sleeps.  However, if the crate is to big he may use one end as the bathroom.  Make sure the crate is the right size.  Leaving just enough room to turn around, room for a toy and a dish of water.  It will try hard to keep its new nest clean.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool  when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if  your dog chews up something innappropriate or has a housebreaking  accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess),  then take the rolled-up newspaper... and hit yourself over the  head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT  TO WATCH MY DOG!"

    Helpful Hints:

star.gifSudden changes in dog food brands or overindulgence in treats or table scraps can cause diarrhea.  Especially the Thanksgiving Turkey!

star.gifShould your puppy have a few housesoiling accidents despite your best efforts to prevent them, neutralize any soiled areas (carpet or floor surface) with an pet odor neutralizer.

Plain white vinegar and baking soda will do the trick!
