                  BREED STANDARDS

Group(s): Toy Height: usually 6-8 inches
Weight: 6 pounds or less Longevity: easily teens, some live to late teens
Colors: any color including solid, marked and splashed Coat type: soft textured smooth coat, glossy
Recognized Registries: AKC, ACA, NCA and others
Overall Appearance: Alert, saucy expression with natural ears and compact, muscular body. The Terrier ancestry is clearly apparent and very generous in the agility and speed of this little dog.

Energy Level: can be high
General Nature: good but generally they are very aware of their vulnerability and can be fearful of movement and noises
  with Children: not a good choice because of the overall fragility
  with other pets: can be excellent but good judgment must be exercised
  with dogs: excellent with dogs of similar size and nature, due to fragility, supervision is mandatory even with another dog that weighs 15 pounds
Socialization requirements: moderate, owners can fall into the trap of overindulging and creating little tyrants
Ideal home characteristics: dedication and commitment is required in being and creating a safe and happy environment for these little dogs as they either don't seem to know their size and take on the world, or tend toward a bit of fearfulness
Temperament Notes: wonderful attitudes, greatly entertaining and devoted
Training requirement: socializing and some basic manners make for an exceptional pet, but don't overlook this dog because of its size, even though small, the Chihuahua is very intelligent and quite capable of learning virtually any skill a trainer can offer.

Description:  The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world.  These little dogs are  active, graceful and alert.  They are swift moving with a saucy expression.  They have a rounded skull; a short, pointed muzzle; erect ears that flare out somewhat to the side; and a sickle tail. The breed comes in all colors and color patterns.  There are two distinct breed types, one with a long coat of soft texture, the other with a short coat. Identical otherwise, both can be whelped in the same litter.  Adored for it's small size, the Chihuahua is a bright eyed, dainty dog who is perfect for apartment living. 

Height: 6 - 9 inches
Weight: 2 - 6 lbs.

Colors: Any color or mixture.
Coat:

Long:
Long, soft to touch, slight waviness is permissible.

Short:
Short, dense, soft to touch.

Temperament: Bold, playful

With Children: Yes, If children are gentle.
With Pets: Yes, lives happily with others.
Special Skills: Family pet.

Watch-dog: Very High
Guard-dog: Very Low

Care and Training: Short haired should be brushed gently or wiped with a damp cloth. The long haired should be brushed daily with a soft bristle brush. Bathe only when necessary. Check ears regularly and keep nails trimmed. Should be socialized early. Minimal exercise is required.

Some breeders recommend adopting a Chihuahua puppy between the ages of 4 - 12 months as it will be more mature and agile and not so apt for injury.

Activity: Moderate
Living Environment: Best suited for indoor living, but enjoys outdoor activity

Health Issues: Eye problems, collapsing trachea and dislocating kneecaps.

Life Span: Well into teen years
Litter Size:
1 - 4 are normal but 5 and 6 is not uncommon.
